All my personal fonts are in $HOME/.fonts/ and I've
run fc-cache -fv. The problem only arises for some
specific fonts, not just sazanami but also for some
Bitstream fonts.

I found a similar pointer on the ConTeXt website.

I've installed xetex as part of texlive 2007. As you
can see xetex was compiled with a different fontconfig
than is provided on my system. I can try to install
the latest xetex from source. I am on gentoo linux,
but I prefer to use stable packages only, thus
fontconfig 2.5 is not yet on my system.
Thanks for the info,
Wilfred
