It sounds like a problem with the x86_64 build; were you previously  
running a 32-bit system?

It might help if you are able to build an updated binary from the  
sources in the XeTeX repository (see the XeTeX/Linux page on  
scripts.sil.org for information); there have been a number of bug- 
fixes and improvements since the TeX Live release. But I don't have  
access to an x86_64 machine to test this myself.
