You're not going back: you're adding some old toy to your others. In  
a reasonably same OS it will happen without overwriting the up-to- 
date software, and without coercing Java apps to use this old stuff.


Walter Schmidt's stuff is for a TFM based TeX. XeTeX is not that  
restricted, except maths, because the standards are so new that just  
one or two fonts exist that meet them. Maybe you just need a new  
mapping from Unicode to a dozen of arbitrarily encoded fonts ...  
Honestly, *I* have no idea how maths work in XeTeX! There is or was  
an effort to use the Euler fonts in mathematical environments that  
could give you some hints.
