[XeTeX] Adressing the long s

Thanks a lot for all the helpful answers I received.

When I started my inquiry I had Will Robertson’s "Contextuals" example
in my mind (section 6.6 in his Fontspec manual). There he applies
\fontspec[Contextuals=Inner]{Hoefler Text} to the word "sometimes" which
is automatically typeset as "ſometimes" then; the first and the last s
are typographically correct.

If this fontspec command could be utilized with fonts besides Hoefler
Text (I don’t own it) I could further use WinEdt as my editor. Due to
its limited Unicode functionality WinEdt does not allow the input of the
long ſ.

Anyway – as I do not have that problem very often I think it is the
easiest way to use WinShell or another Unicode-compliant editor for
those rare cases and type in the long ſ directly.
