Neither seems to be true. Can you try linenum with some other file?  
Its contents must not necessarily make sense, it can also contain  
maths ... starting in LaTeX you could migrate this file to XeLaTeX  
when it works right in LaTeX.

The sequence of line numbers looks almost OK. Gaps can vanish when  
you re-run (Xe)LaTeX, though starting with 7 looks a bit strange.
