Oh, I understand that, I was just (trying) explaining LaTeX's point of view.

LaTeX has found the package, but the usage is different than with
longtable. You'll have to read the xtab docs for the full explanation,
but I'm afraid if you don't have control over it in the DocBook->LaTeX
translation it will be a pain to do the alterations in syntax that the
other requires.
