This may hold for fonts covering the Latin script, but for Arabic, 
Persian etc. the two "pseudo-glyphs" ZWJ and ZWNJ are essential and have 
been standard in Arabic fonts for many years now. My arabxetex package 
relies on them in several instances, and they work with all Arabic fonts 
I have tested until now.
