[XeTeX] Character protrusion in XeTeX/XeLaTeX?

You can make characters active and then have them adjust their  
positioning against the margins --- kind of a nuisance when one then  
can't write \hspace*{4.5bp} though (since the . would be active so as  
to optically adjust). Code for it in the TeXBook where it's called  
``an easier problem''.

Peter Wilson also created a LaTeX package for it as well, ``hanging'':
