Yes, but what I meant is that \breve is defined in the LaTeX core  
itself (fontmath.ltx is read when creating the LaTeX format  
latex.fmt), not by some math package. Hence the definition of \breve  
is always in effect in LaTeX.

What I suspect is that MusiXTeX redefines \breve afterwards, to no  
harm, so that this redefinition is in effect when \begin{document} is  
processed.

However, fontspec.sty (without [no-math] option) redefines \breve  
within an \AtBeginDocument, so that this redefinition always  
supersedes that performed by MusiXTeX and becomes the one in use  
after \begin{document}. This must be causing the problems you have.
