Even more additional information:

Something is happening on the way:
xdvipdfmx embeds a Type 1 CID font, while
xdvitopdf embeds a Type 1 font.

It seems Preview in MacOS 10.3.9 can't handle that.
In the meantime I tested it on 10.4.8 and it doesn't work there either.

Since it works in AR this seems to be a bug in Preview, time to send a 
bug report to Apple.
