But you get old packages, at least for our needs ---Emacs 21.x, teTeX  
instead of TeXLive...

I managed to install TeXLive (from TUG's DVD) on Ubuntu, but not at  
first try. On the other hand, installing TeXLive on a Mac

and the latest Emacs

or Mac-like distribution

is really the easiest thing.
