Interesting! I guess this is a newer version from the latest LaTeX  
update, and it must use a different approach to some of the internal  
definitions, such that it doesn't run into the xetex mathcode bug.

So using the experimental LaTeX update looks like another workaround  
in this case, but it's still a bug in xetex, and will probably  
surface elsewhere sooner or later.

(BTW, to prove there's a bug in xetex, you can try a command-line  
example:

   xetex \\scrollmode \\mathcode100=32768 \\showthe\\mathcode100 \\end

which will give the same error message; compare the same command line  
with regular tex.)
