Thanks for your answer! I know evince and kpdf but they are not an
alternative to xpdf for me (and those I share my PDF files with).
And at least evince and kpdf do not render much better[1,2]. I don't
know okular and it's not part of Debian Sarge (apart from that I use
GNOME ...).
