So you had a faulty 'Mac OS X aware' tape archive ...

You should check the files installed! As Bruno found they are  
containing the keyword "link" and then some file name. I found that  
in the local teTeX tree only one XeTeX sym-link exists:

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/doc/xetex/xetexref.pdf -> XeTeX- 
reference.pdf

so it's not so much work to correct the installation. Inside the  
sources I found two sym-links:

xetex/libs/icu-xetex -> icu-release-3-4-source
xetex/texmf/doc/xetex/xetexref.pdf -> XeTeX-reference.pdf

and none in xdvipdfmx.

Creating a Mac OS X file or directory alias did not enable me to read  
any contents ...
