I think you can already compile xdvipdfmx yourself on OS X. AFAIK
xdvipdfmx does have some other limitations, though. And mixing something
like mathpazo with fontspec is quite tricky. Something simple as
\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage[osf]{mathpazo}
\begin{document}
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet \dots
\end{document}
fails, because fontspec switches to 'U' encoding. One can work around
this, but up to now I have not managed to get the input encoding right
for parallel use of TFM and fontspec provided fonts ...
