This misconception must be squashed!
PGF is called "portable" because it is written in a platform-
independent way.
It requires drivers to implement its drawing primitives in whichever
program
you're running. Therefore, it does *NOT* use PostScript. The manual
states
that even an SVN driver could be written -- it's just a matter of
effort.
