[XeTeX] An example of the use of \x="[filename]"

This is getting weird.... because I just tried BernhardModernStd- 
Bold.otf myself (uninstalled, in the current directory), and it  
worked fine.

You don't have an older version of xdvipdfmx lurking somewhere, do  
you? (Did you try building it yourself, before the 0.995 package  
appeared?) What do:

   which xdvipdfmx
   ls -l `which xdvipdfmx`

tell you?
