Howdy,

\newcommand*\sanskrit... is the same as \newcommand*{\sanskrit}... 
since there is only a single token inside the braces. The * form of 
\newcommand won't allow ``long'' arguments; i.e., arguments that are 
longer than a paragraph will force an error message to be generated.
