It is no longer used by fontspec, but when I proposed it in my 
ignorance (its existence posed more problems than it solved), I believe 
Jon Breitenbucher took it up for use with his Adobe Type Classics 
OpenType support bundle. So I wouldn't discard it unless he gives the 
okay...
