After sending the sample file, I noticed that I hadn't included an 
%&encoding=UTF-8 Unicode line to ensure that TeXShop opens it with the 
right encoding. My default is UTF-8, so I don't normally think about 
it. Just a heads-up for anyone who doesn't normally use that 
setting....
