We'll see! The coming weekend will keep me from bike riding ...

I took over most of the code from Pierre Chatelier (or Ross Moore,
without actually trying the dvips trail since all I need were lengths).

I too thought of inaccurate TFM files -- but then, how does LaTeX work
so well on a regular basis? (And why should cmbright carry more exact
dimensions?) I finally decided to put some invisible frame around the
box, an extra to the usual separating space (which Pierre does too) --
which in the first instance did not work! Then came you with \null
which allowed me to do this. I thought it was good enough having sure
0.5pt or such white space around the insert. I think (an elephant's)
hair is thicker than this.

I am waiting for an answer from Pierre ...
