Ah, That may well have caused your brokenness... did you leave .pfb fonts
stored in Apple-accessible Font directories? That's a reliable crasher
for Apple's font system, especially when it iterates through available fonts. 

I reported this bug to apple several months ago. (Problem ID # 3498936 if
anyone wants to chime in.)
