Hi, Hans,
Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea that eTeX was doing the wrong
thing with specials itself.
Thanks for the offer, but I'll happily decline and let it be picked up by
someone who *does* do RL typesetting. I don't, and there's just so long I
can spend on my tools rather than my research and writing!
