Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I thought I was going crazy and/or doing some 
perfectly drivelling thing wrong. Vertical spacing is now exactly as it 
should be and all is right with the world.

Printing presents no problems, though I am printing to an HP inkjet -- 
not a networked PostScript printer.
