I was a bit premature.

Still grateful though.

The .pdf refuses to print.

 From TeXShop I get:

[TeXshop icon] Print
                Error while printing.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 had a similar difficulty (This document could 
not be printed or some such).

And Adobe Reader 6 announced something like that as well, and then 
stopped functioning (all menus are greyed out, except for Select All 
and some of the window controls and Services).

I'll reboot and examine all this again.
