Installing XeTeX adds in /Library/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf the  
lines:

% OpenType fonts
OTFFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/otf//

I ran the test from within TeXShop.

With pdfTeX:
