[Tuglist] Twocolumn

When I used \twocolumn in report class, I get text running into 2nd
column for text of Ist column and into right margin for text of 2nd
column for a number of lines. But if I use \begin{twocolumn}, text
adjusted nicely well within width of two columns?

Is there any logical explanation for this?

Further "info latex", only have \twocolumn and has no entry for
environment "twocolumn", to be used with begin and end.
