Those are _not_ provided for compilation, but as a reference
example.  Generating a dvi file from them for reading purposes is a
breach of the copyright of Addison Wesley.

Well, those lines are there for a purpose.  Could you imagine just
what purpose that might be?

Small wonder.  The TeXbook predates LaTeX, and even now Donald Knuth
does not use LaTeX.
