Well, preview does nothing to change that, its manual just documents
with what options best to call dvips and GhostScript (dvips -Ppdf and
a lot of options to GhostScript). The advantages with preview are
(apart from the documentation) that it can output closely cropped
images, and that you can produce, say, 100 closely cropped images
from a single run of LaTeX, dvips and GhostScript, with each image
having its own size. It is also more correct than dvips -E in
figuring out bounding boxes, which is important if you use scaled or
rotated material, PStricks macros, psfrag and similar stuff.
