I am using "mathptmx" package to get math symbols and the text

   Can you please suggest alternate.

Why dont you try txfonts which is an elegant free font compatible
with times?

txfonts (all the afm, tfm, vf, pfb, fd and sty) are available at
CTAN:

 CTAN:/tex-archive/fonts/txfonts/

The documentation is excellent that helps even a novice to make it
work with any TeX implementation.
