Works fine here (10.10.4 Public Beta) to switch between TL 2015 and 2014, and in a way compatible with texdist (the command-line utility): if the distribution is changed with one, the other recognizes it, and the other way round.

Just one remark: for the architecture, TLU uses the technical name (x86_64-darwin) while the TeXDist pref pane uses more human readable names (on my setup Intel 64 and Intel 32, and I imagine on older setups PowerPC). It might make sense, given the GUI philosophy of TLU, to follow the pref pane in this respect.

Also, still regarding the architecture, TLU doesn't seem to offer the choice between the two installed architectures (x86_64-darwin and universal-darwin), it only displays x86_64-darwin. (Not that I ever attempted, or will ever attempt, to change that other than for testing.) Is this what you mean by "not allowing changing that level of granularity"?
