I discover only now that fmtutil-{sys,user} insists on using
the existing binary in the default TeXLive location, *despite*
PATH having been adjusted to provide as first choice the
binary (tex or pdftex) which I had built locally anew.

As a result all of my new testing today was done with the format files
tex.fmt and etex.fmt
created using tex/pdftex from /usr/local/texlive/2025/bin
not the new tex/pdftex binaries.

I guess I should have used manually the -ini option, my bad.

But my guess
would be that the tex.fmt and etex.fmt actually do not depend
on the way tex/pdftex is built ? as long as we are talking of the
same source and same Plain.tex

The benchmarks were made with the correct binaries though.
