To whom was this directed and for which patches?

The -lpthread addition was added to dependents of ICU, and it's not
even clear whether and on what circumstances this flag is needed.

The undefining of CS & ES is just super ugly monkey-patching of the
code that needs a proper fix instead.
And unless there's someone here willing to do the work, we don't
really have any decent patch yet.
