Folks, and in particular Akira,

Thanks very much for looking into this. HOWEVER

I updated my copy of the source, and then applied the diff by hand. Then I ran .Build. I'm very sorry to report that the compilation stopped at exactly the same spot with exactly the same error.

You report that Hironobu confirmed that xetex on MacOS compiles after applying the patch. But did he compile on El Capitan?
It is more likely that he compiled on Sierra or High Sierra, but I never had problems on these systems.

So sadly, we are back where we started.
