Hmm.  I don't know of anything that has changed in this regard in the
last two days.  I did notice that same error myself before that.

Doesn't BSD use fontconfig for system fonts?  Does your build system
have it, or has something about it changed in those two days?
(Unlikely, but ...)  I'm at a loss to explain why the fontconfig test is
suddenly failing.  If you look in Work/texk/web2c/config.log and search
for fontconfig, you should see the exact compilation invocation, error
message, and source file.  Starting with lines like this:

configure:19916: checking for installed fontconfig headers and library
configure:19949: gcc -o conftest -g -O2     conftest.c -lfontconfig   
..

Hopefully something in there will help debug?
