I've missed it and have to apologize for the noise.  Peter's solution
is much better than what I've suggested and even doesn't need to be
documented.  Since I don't have access to a system which doesn't
support luajittex I assumed that it has to be disabled it "at the
beginning".

What I actually had in mind is that you can waste a lot of time if you
don't pass appropriate arguments to configure.  Norbert wrote

 > linux-alpha with --disable-luajittex compiled fine, 277 "binaries"

and I assumed that --disable-luajittex is required on some systems.
Again, sorry for the noise and thanks, Mojca, for the link.

I'm wondering where we would be today without Peter.
