I haven't got it to work with -static. I may have to reinstall gcc/g++
according to my likings and not those of csw.

Not likely.
If anything, asy still compiles with the SUN-provided gcc 3.4.3, which
does not create the shared libraries problem (the ones you get are
those in /usr/sfw/ which is more standard). Not elegant but...
