Are you sure that error message is not resulting from your gcc3/g++3
trial, rather than gcc4?  It sure looks like it to me -- gcc 4.6.3 does
not use `...' in error messages, it has switched to '...'.
Also, gcc 4.6.3 works for me (and others), and this does not look like a
system-dependent error.

peb and I also ran into this exact error and discussed it on
this list back in January -- it happened for us with gcc3, but not gcc4.
