That was probably a misunderstanding. I was replying to this part:

and I wasn't sure if the way I compiled was a legitimate one (maybe
only TL_MAKE=gmake would work and MAKE=gmake not).

Which is exactly what I did, and compilation was stuck in the middle
(apparently waiting for input to sed).
