Hi Vladimir,
I'm surprised that you are not aware of the "TeX Live Build Contest".
The rules are simple: The one who has the oldest system is the looser...
...and has to provide the binaries.

For instance: I provided binaries for TL-2007. They didn't work for
Hartmut because he had an older system than me and we decided to ship
Hartmut's binaries instead of mine. A year later, Hartmuts binaries
didn't work for me because meanwhile he updated his system and I
provided the binaries. This year, the award goes to Peter because he
has by far the oldest system.

To be more serious: I update my system each weekend. But unlike
Debian, Gentoo only provides "stable" and "testing". There is nothing
in-between and I decided to use "stable". There is a newer gcc on my
sytem but it isn't used by default:

ls -l /usr/bin/gcc*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 14512 May 30 20:24 /usr/bin/gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    62 Apr 13  2008 /usr/bin/gcc-4.1.1 -> /usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.1/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    62 May 30 20:24 /usr/bin/gcc-4.1.2 -> /usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.2/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    62 Oct  5 00:33 /usr/bin/gcc-4.3.2 -> /usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.3.2/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc

But I hesitate to change anything here because a little mistake can
break the whole system. The Gentoo update mechanism heavily depends
on gcc.

The Kernel is antique. It even doesn't support sound. This bothers
me a lot. But there are so many other things with higher priorities...

But

   http://tug.org/~vvv/asy.gz

works fine here.

Will look into it later. I'm quite dizzy, went to bed too late last
night.

Regards,
