My first idea, easier than installing gcc: turn off all optimization and
see if you get correct results.  Perhaps the compiler is wrongly
optimizing away the swapping.

(Vladimir, are there any GNU tools on the netadm5 virtual sparc machine
where you kindly gave me the accounts?  I didn't see any.  In
particular, I'm surprised it builds at all with Solaris make.  Anyway,
I'm trying ...)
