Since configure is reporting bigendian, it seems that that is not the
problem :(.  Oh well, would have been easier that way.

My next idea: try compiling with gcc.  It does seem to be specifically
about the compilation process, since all other reporting platforms
(thanks, everyone) are ok, regardless of endianness.  Clearly the code
"should" work fine with other compilers, and always has before, but ...

Olaf, did you compile the IRIX binaries with gcc or the system compiler?

figure out what's going on.
