Hi Thomas and Peter and all,

(Intermixing quotes, sorry.)

    Yes Karl, please advice!

I certainly agree we should only build one set of linux-ppc binaries;
space is limited as always, and this is not such a popular architecture.
And thus the 32-bit binaries make sense, as the ones most likely to run.

So, please upload the tarball or send me a url and I'll install your new
binaries ...

    and I forgot to mention: is it safe to assume that all linux-ppc64
    systems do have 32-bit versions of libfontconfig.so & Co?

I'd expect that some systems won't have them, but we can only do what we
can do. Assuming 64-bit versions of everything sounds even worse.

    I have seen distros where these 32-bit compatibility libraries are
    optional

Me too, and this lack of interest in compatibility is a big pain.

    In the "Special Considerations for xindy" sections, could the

Thanks for noticing that, I'll change it around.

    asymptote: directions for compiling will follow, don't try atm;

Right.

    texworks: too much trouble because of incompatible libraries, don't
    try at all?

I don't plan to distribute any TW binaries in TL except Windows.
However, it is still useful to try to build the binaries, to be
distributed from the TW page -- if you have all the rather extensive
prerequisites, notably Qt.

I do not know the state of TW build instructions or binary
distributions, or, for that matter, TW source.

    and xz: I had sent a binary a few weeks ago; is that
    enough or should I recompile once more?

No need to recompile xz.

Reminder to Olaf, Arthur, Randy: we're still lacking xz (and other!)
binaries for mips-irix, sparc-linux, i386-freebsd ...

Thanks,
Karl
