    System freetype is in the default link path.  

Doesn't matter.  The simple -lft2 (or whatever it is) should find the TL
one (in your first build, not the second one where you intentionally
tried to omit the TL freetype).  There shouldn't be any symbols that
require resolution from the system freetype.

No.  As a wild guess, I suspect the (system) fontconfig library is
depending on the system freetype library.

Doesn't seem like it to me.  But we're not going to get anywhere with
these random emails and wild theories ... you just have to find the
facts, and it's not possible to do that remotely.
