I also failed with your try1.tex.
I changed try1.tex a little.
See try1.tex in an attached try1.zip.
I obtained try1.pdf with data.dat by
pdflatex --shell-escape try1.tex.
try1.pdf and data.dat are also in the attached try1.zip.
