Dear Stefan
I do not use TeXwork to prepare file, but I use TeXwork to browse it. If I use Adobe than I need close file before translation, and this is not convenient. However I face similar problem in TeXwork.
I do not think this happens only for large documents. I saw such problem with document when it had few pages. And probably it depends on macro that I use. Very interesting that when I use babel package the problem disappear.
And the last. I delayed my answer because it appears that problem appears not every time. I agree with your description of possible reason. So one of reason I suspected was high load on CPU. However yesterday even CPU was sometimes had about 80% I did not face the problem. Today first compilation brings me the gray screen. I prepared as you advised bat file with command
COPY /B file.pdf+,,file.pdf
I was thinking that because texworks shows page -1 of 0, and it means that it assumes file corrupted. Usually after this when recompile file screen does not refresh. But in this case your command worked fine and I saw new text after compilation. So I will keep this command, I think it is very useful.
Thank you very much
