[texworks] Help!

Hi!
    I'd be very grateful if you could help me with a problem. I'm typing a file in plaintex and I can't compile it because texworks states that there are errors when I am sure that there are none. For example, texworks
does not accept $f_{-p}$ or $\langle x_{n_t}\rangle$. I have carefully examined these expressions, and tried retyping them. I do not understand how they can contain errors.
