I'm wondering, is there anything special in your document, that actually 
require just LaTeX? (pstricks perhaps?)

There are many reasons to prefer pdflatex over plain old LaTeX, the 
microtype package is a very good example, full support for this require 
pdflatex.

But the engine can be changed using the dropdown next to the green 
button, and changed for good via the TeXWorks preferences.
