[texworks] help needed

I have just installed miktex 2.9 on my laptop, but I am unable to use it. I have followed the instructions
in the texworks manual and typed the short programme on pp. 2-3  in section 3.2.1. However, I cannot compile it. When I try to, I get error messages that I do not understand.  I would be so grateful if someone could tell me
what to do.
