Just by way of corrobation, here is a private follow-up
which I received from someone who monitors this list :

> You're absolutely right, I use LaTeX because it is the de facto accessible medium for mathematical sciences.  I don't touch Ms word or any other wyseewyg editor for reasons you've already stated.
